Build a strong wooden table with two freestanding benches that slide underneath when they are not being used — giving you comfortable seating without permanently taking up extra floor space.

This design works especially well indoors in dining areas, kitchens, cottages, cabins, rec rooms, and other spaces where you want full-size seating without chairs permanently surrounding the table. It can also be used outdoors with a suitable finish.

These downloadable PDF woodworking plans include the materials list, complete parts lists, cut-out schedule, dimensions, construction diagrams, and step-by-step building instructions.

The Story Behind This Plan

I originally built this table and bench set for my daughter-in-law. Seeing her reaction to the finished set made me realize the design was something other people might enjoy building too.

That real-life build is what inspired me to turn the project into a complete woodworking plan and make it available online. The finished table and benches shown on this page are the actual set I built for her, being used indoors in her home — not a staged example or a computer rendering.

It started as a one-off family project and became a plan because the design proved useful, practical, and worth sharing.

A Space-Saving Table That Works Indoors

A traditional table and chair setup can take up a surprising amount of room, especially when the seating has to remain pulled out around the table.

That can be a real issue in kitchens, dining areas, cottages, cabins, apartments, rec rooms, and other multipurpose spaces where every bit of floor space matters.

Because these benches slide underneath the table when they are not being used, the set gives you a full dining or gathering area without permanently crowding the room.

Two Benches That Store Under the Table

This table is designed with two separate freestanding benches that slide underneath when they are not being used.

Pull them out when it is time to sit down, move them wherever extra seating is needed, and slide them back beneath the table afterward.

Because the benches are not permanently attached to the table, the set is more versatile than a traditional fixed picnic table. The benches can be used independently and returned underneath the table when finished.

The result is a practical wooden table and bench set that is especially useful indoors, while still being suitable for patios, decks, cottages, cabins, and other outdoor spaces when properly finished.

These photos show the completed table and benches in the home where the original set is actually being used. They show how naturally the design fits into an indoor dining space, and how the benches can be pulled out for seating and tucked back underneath to open the room back up afterward.

Practical Features

Separate Table and Benches
The two benches are completely independent from the table, making them easy to move and use wherever additional seating is needed.

Space-Saving Indoor Seating
Both benches are designed to slide underneath the table when not in use, helping keep kitchens, dining rooms, cottages, cabins, and multipurpose spaces open and uncluttered.

60-Inch Tabletop
The tabletop is constructed from five 60-inch planks, creating a substantial surface for meals, projects, gatherings, or everyday use.

Two 48-Inch Benches
Each bench uses two 48-inch seat planks, providing useful seating while keeping the benches compact enough to store beneath the table.

Strong Wooden Construction
The table base uses aprons, leg spacers, and crossmembers to help create a strong, rigid structure.

Clean Table and Bench Surfaces
The tabletop and bench-seat cleats are fastened from underneath, eliminating the need for screws driven down through the finished top surfaces.

Indoor or Outdoor Use
The finished set works naturally as dining furniture indoors, but it can also be built for a patio, deck, cottage, cabin, or other outdoor setting with a suitable exterior-grade finish.

Project Dimensions

The images below show the overall dimensions for both the table and the benches so you can quickly see how the finished set will fit your space.

Who These Plans Are For

This project is intended for a beginner-to-intermediate woodworker who is already comfortable measuring and cutting lumber, drilling, fastening pieces together, and following a woodworking plan.

A mitre saw will make the required crosscuts easier and more accurate. A table saw is also useful because some of the lumber needs to be ripped to the required widths.

You do not need to be a professional furniture maker, but you should be comfortable using woodworking tools safely and accurately before starting the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this table be used indoors?

Yes. Indoor use is one of the strengths of this design. The benches slide underneath the table when they are not needed, which makes the set especially useful in dining areas, kitchens, cottages, cabins, apartments, and other spaces where you want seating without permanently using extra floor space.

Are the benches attached to the table?

No. Both benches are completely separate from the table. They can be moved wherever extra seating is needed and slid underneath the table when you are finished using them.

Can this table be used outdoors?

Yes. The design can also be used outdoors. If the finished set will remain outside, use a suitable exterior-grade finish and maintain the finish as needed.

How long are the table and benches?

The tabletop is built using five 60-inch-long planks. Each bench seat is built using two 48-inch-long planks.

Is this a picnic table?

Not in the traditional sense. The benches are not attached to the table. This is a separate wooden table with two movable benches, giving you more flexibility in how the seating is arranged.

What skill level is required?

The project is best suited to a beginner-to-intermediate woodworker who is already comfortable measuring, cutting lumber, drilling, fastening, and following a woodworking plan.

What tools will I need?

Normal woodworking tools for measuring, drilling, fastening, and cutting lumber will be required. A mitre saw is useful for accurate crosscuts, and a table saw is useful for ripping some pieces to their required widths.

Is this a physical product?

No. This listing is for downloadable PDF woodworking plans that you use to build the table and two benches yourself.
