A Practical Way to Haul and Store Clean Water at an Off-Grid Camp
Tired of using dirty pond water at your campsite?
Here’s a solution I came up with that allows me to bring clean town water to camp and have enough stored to last the entire weekend.
It only takes about an hour to fill the tote from a standard garden hose, and it can be done while packing for the trip.
The system uses:
- Two IBC tote tanks
- A submersible pump
- An elevated DIY tote stand
The tote in the truck is used to transport clean municipal water to camp. Once onsite, a submersible pump transfers the water into the elevated tote on the stand.
From there, the elevated tote acts like a clean above-ground well system for the campsite.
The setup works very well for:
- Seasonal campsites
- Off-grid cabins
- RV properties
- Hunting camps
- Fishing camps
- Remote weekend properties

The Real Purpose of the Elevated Tote Stand
A lot of people online talk about elevated water totes as if they create full household water pressure from gravity alone.
That was not the goal of this build.
The real purpose of the stand height is to help maintain positive feed pressure to a small 12V trailer or RV pump connected near the bottom tote outlet.
The tote acts as an elevated water reservoir while the pump handles the main pressure delivery.
The system can also run using a standard 120V well pump when generator power or campsite power is available.
This creates a flexible seasonal off-grid water system that can operate several different ways depending on the available power source.
How the Water System Works
The process is actually very simple.
First, I fill an IBC tote with clean municipal water in a nearby town.
The tote is transported to camp in the truck.
A full 275-gallon IBC tote can weigh roughly 2,500 lb once the tote, cage, water, hose, and pump are included. I haul mine using an F-250, but anyone using a lighter-duty truck should check the payload sticker inside the driver door before filling the tote completely. In many half-ton trucks, a full tote may exceed the safe payload rating, so a partial fill may be required.
Once at the campsite, a submersible 120V well pump is used to transfer the water from the tote in the truck bed into the elevated tote on the stand.
After the transfer is complete, the well pump can remain inside the elevated tote and the tote essentially functions like a clean above-ground well reservoir.
The system can then supply water to:
- RVs
- Campers
- Seasonal cabins
- Hose systems
- Outdoor sinks
- Small campsite plumbing systems
- Pressure tanks
For low-power operation, a small 12V trailer or RV pump can also be connected directly to the tote outlet.
Because the tote is elevated, the weight of the water and the height of the stand help maintain positive feed pressure to the trailer pump.
This makes the system work very well with:
- Solar panel systems
- Battery banks
- Small off-grid electrical systems
- Quiet low-power campsites
The 120V well pump only needs to do the heavy transfer work.
Afterward, the smaller trailer pump can handle normal daily campsite water use.
Why the Stand Was Designed for Off-Grid Assembly
One of the biggest problems with large outdoor structures is transportation.
Many off-grid properties are difficult to access, especially with fully assembled structures.
This stand was specifically designed so the parts can be pre-cut at home, transported flat to camp, and assembled onsite using standard tools and hardware.
That makes the system much more practical for:
- Seasonal campsites
- Remote cabins
- Hunting camps
- Fishing properties
- Woodland access roads
- Rural off-grid locations
The finished structure is strong, heavily braced, and designed to support the weight of a full water tote while remaining practical for real-world seasonal use.

Why This Setup Works Well for Seasonal Off-Grid Camping
What I like most about this setup is its flexibility.
If 120V AC power or a generator is available, the well pump works extremely well.
If the campsite is running primarily from solar power, the system can operate using a smaller 12V trailer pump connected to the tote outlet.
The elevated tote provides:
- Clean water storage
- Reserve water capacity
- Gravity assistance to the trailer pump
- Easier hose and bucket filling
- A stable water source for pumps
- A practical alternative to hauling small containers constantly
For many seasonal off-grid campsites, this type of system can provide a simple and reliable clean-water setup without needing an expensive drilled well immediately.

This is not just a concept build.
This is the actual system I use for transporting clean town water to camp and maintaining a reliable water supply onsite.
