For builders, construction workers, tradespeople, and anyone who spends the warmer months working with their hands, summer can be especially busy. There are longer workdays, repairs, yard work, property maintenance, family commitments, and plenty of other jobs competing for the same Saturday.
Your own projects keep getting pushed aside.
Then winter arrives.
The grass stops growing. Outdoor work slows down. Saturdays are not quite as crowded.
And suddenly the workshop starts looking pretty inviting.
Winter Is When You Finally Get to Build for Yourself
If you build for a living, much of the warmer part of the year can be spent building things for somebody else.
Even if woodworking is only a hobby, the same thing happens around your own property. There is always something more urgent than the bench you wanted to build or the new table you planned for the deck.
Winter changes the pace.
That project you kept saying you would get to eventually can finally make its way onto the workbench.
There is another advantage too.
You do not need it tomorrow.
If you are building something for next summer, there is no pressure to rush through it because company is coming Saturday, because you need somewhere to sit around the fire that evening, or because another job is already waiting for you to finish this one.
You can take your time.
Cut the pieces one evening. Do some assembly on Saturday. Come back later for sanding or finishing.
For many builders, that is when a project becomes enjoyable again instead of becoming one more job that has to be finished.
Think Back to Last Summer
Last summer can seem like a blur when you look back and realize just how busy you really were. The job demanding most of your time, coming home to the kids playing in the yard, backyard barbecues after work — summer has a way of filling every day.
Speaking of that yard, did you notice things that needed replacing, fixing, or maybe something that was missing altogether? Something you looked at and thought, “I’d like to build that.”

Outdoor Projects Do Not Have to Be Built Outdoors
In fact, some are better built indoors even on summer days. A bench, picnic table, garbage box, planter, or parcel box can all be built in a basement, garage, or workshop, which makes them especially well suited to winter.
You can work without waiting for a dry Saturday, dragging tools across the yard, worrying about getting rained out, or racing daylight at the end of the day. When spring arrives, much of the work is already behind you.
Sometimes a Summer Project Becomes Useful Before Summer
One thing I have learned from building outdoor projects during winter is that they do not always sit around waiting for warm weather. I remember one bench in particular that I built during the winter and kept in the basement. It was supposed to be an outdoor bench, but it ended up being used all winter.
It became a handy place to sit while getting ready to head outside and a place to kick the boots off after coming back in. By spring, the bench went outside where it had originally been intended to go — and I actually missed it. Next thing I knew, I was looking around for somewhere to sit down and take my boots off because the bench I had been using all winter was gone.
That is the funny thing about building useful things. Sometimes they find their own use and end up solving a problem you did not even realize you had.
There’s another bench there now. A permanent one.
Winter Saturdays Have a Different Pace
There is another part of winter workshop time that is easy to overlook. Saturdays slow down. The coffee gets poured — or maybe something a little colder — and suddenly the shop feels less like a place to rush through a job and more like a place to spend a little time.
A finished bench becomes somewhere to sit, and a project on the workbench becomes something to talk about. That is part of having a workshop.
During summer, there always seems to be another job waiting as soon as the first one is finished. Winter gives you a little more room to work, think, talk, and enjoy being in the shop. Sometimes that slower pace is exactly what makes you want to build again.
Some Winter Projects Can Go Straight to Work
Most of the projects you build during winter may be waiting for spring or summer before they really get used. A parcel drop box is different. You can build it in the workshop in the middle of winter, carry it outside when it is finished, and start using it right away.
Winter can actually make the need for one more obvious. A package left on the step can end up covered in snow, blown around during a storm, or left wet after a change in weather. That is why winter can be such a useful time for a builder. Every useful project finished during winter is one less job waiting when the weather improves.
And if you do not have enough room in the workshop to store finished furniture all winter, you do not necessarily have to assemble it yet. You can use the plans to cut, shape, drill, and sand all the pieces during winter, then store the parts until spring. With more time on your hands, you can even stain or finish every piece before assembly. That makes it much easier to cover areas that can be difficult to reach once everything is put together, leaving the finished project looking cleaner and giving the wood better protection.
You do not have to fill the workshop with finished furniture. Pick one project you noticed last summer, get as much of it done as your space allows, and take one thing off the spring list before it even starts growing.
